At Detroit Bikram we know from countless personal testimonials
over the years, that Bikram Yoga is good for lowering blood
pressure. We now have an opportunity to participate in scientific
research which sets out prove the effects of Bikram Yoga on blood
pressure!
Many of our long time students will remember Jozlyn
Jareunpoon who taught and practiced with us for many
years. Jozlyn is now a graduate student on the west coast, and is
organizing the following research project, with the intent to
publish the results in a leading scientific journal. Her project is
titled:
"Acute Effects of Bikram Yoga
on Ambulatory Blood Pressure"
In order to complete this project,
Jozlyn is requesting
volunteers from our yoga family to participate in her
study! This is an exciting time to be a part of research that has
the potential to cause a positive and lasting impact in the
combined disciplines of modern medicine and yoga.

A note to our regulars: with all the new students coming into
the studio, we hear a steady stream of complaints from our regulars
about etiquette violations. Let's all take a deep breath for a
moment and consider the following scenario.
You are lying peacefully and quietly on your mat 15 minutes
before class like the fine role model that you are. And then...
a group of new students walk into the yoga room, with their
shoes on, while blowing bubbles with chewing gum, while talking to
each other, while some of them are texting, and the others talking
on their cell phones through bluetooth earpieces.
What is a good yogi to do?
To help navigate these difficult waters, we have come up with a
brief quiz:

Does 'Earth Day' stir up any thoughts and feelings in you? Here
is a litte survey for our yoga family... any responses fall into
these categories?
A) THOUGHTFUL INTROSPECTION: "What more can I do to improve our
home planet, how can I change, and inspire those around me to
change in real and significant ways?"
B) AMBIVALENCE: "Another Hallmark holiday... yawn!"
C) ANGER: "Its just another part of the climate-change hoax put
on by them Liberals, tryin to fool us hard-workin', honest,
red-blooded Amercans into thinkin' we need to change our
ways!!"
D) NOT SURE: "I didn't even know Earth Day was April 22nd!"

"Welcome to Bikram's Beginning Yoga class! Please stand with
your toes and heels together for Pranayama Deep Breathing, it's
good for your lungs and respiratory system..."
Sound familiar?
If you are semi-alert at the start of class, it should sound
familiar!
Every class begins with Pranayama Deep Breathing.
As a beginner, its common that people feel awkward with this
breathing exercise. There are several things happening at once that
require coordination... breathing in slowly by the nose, then
breathing out slowly by the mouth, all with a synchronized arm and
head movement, and all while thinking 'OMG... why is it so hot in
here, what did I get myself into?'.

"Give me 60 Days and I will change your life" ~ Bikram
Choudhury
Daily yoga has always been and will always be the most effective
way to make progress in your practice. Making 'progress' in your
yoga practice is not about who is more flexible, or trying to look
perfect in a posture. Progress is much more of an internal
experience than it is external. While everyone experiences this
very differently, we know the overall result of a daily yoga is
improved benefits to your health and vitality.
To help motivate our yoga family to experience the benefits of
daily yoga, we are hosting a studio wide 30 Day Yoga Challenge this
March. Many of you have signed up, about 45 students in Farmington
Hills, and 55 students in Troy, most doing the 30 Day Yoga
Challenge, with about ten doing a 60 Day Challenge!

As far as yoga goes, Bikram Yoga is a pretty intense
practice. Spending 90 minutes in the yoga "Torture Chamber"
as Bikram calls it, is always quite a challenge. In response
to this challenge we sometimes develop habits that we think make
the practice easier, but in reality make it more difficult. To help
navigate these waters and to help everyone get the most out of this
transformative practice, we have identified our:
"Top 10 List of Habits That Seem Like a Good Idea, But Actually
Make Class Harder"
- Wiping sweat: This is a big one. We know
that sweat can feel unseemly, but it is our greatest protection
from overheating in class. Sweat acts as our body's naturally
cooling system. If we wipe off too much sweat, our temperatures
spike, resulting in discomfort.
- Fanning ourselves: It might feel momentarily
nice to fan ourselves a bit. However, the motion of fanning uses up
extra energy, creating more heat. We don't want that!
